The Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (read our review!) press conference was held yesterday, Aug. 7, 2014, at the Glorietta Activity Center. Fans of the movie, series and manga, started lining up as early at 8 a.m. and there were even participants that came from as far as Davao City and Pangasinan. To open the press conference, Rurouni Kenshin cosplayers, dancers, and samurai exhibitionists were invited to show off their ingenious costumes and dedication to the craft. The show’s host, Sam Oh, kept the crowd entertained while director Keishi Otomo and stars Takeru Satoh (Kenshin Himura) and Munetaka Aoki (Sanosuke Sagara) made their way to the activity center.
Upon taking the stage, Otomo, Satoh, and Aoki were greeted enthusiastically by the hundreds of people who flocked to the mall to meet them. (Watch them walk down the red carpet!) The three guests were charming, affable, and took their time to answer as many questions as possible from the press. One of the questions fielded was “which living person alive is like Kenshin and why?” to which Aoki answered “the person is him!” as he pointed to a blushing Satoh. When asked later on how they would feel if a Hollywood version of Rurouni Kenshin was made, director Otomo jokingly said “Go ahead, try it. I dare you.”
Otomo, Satoh, and Munetaka even went so far as to learn to a few Filipino phrases such as “magandang gabi po,” “maraming salamat,” “mahal ko kayo,” and Munetaka’s very special “ASTIG!”
When asked how their stay in the Philippines has been, Satoh responded that it had been a lot fun and the movie’s reception in the Philippines went beyond his imagination. Munetaka took a moment to gather his thoughts before he shouted “MAHAL KO KAYO” one more time, much to the delight of the participants. Otomo, for his part, said that he, too, was surprised by the warm welcome of the Filipinos and that this was an experience he will bring back to Japan.
To wrap up the press conference, a couple of lucky fans were allowed to go onstage and meet the guests and even receive a warm embrace from Aoki. Otomo, Satoh, and Aoki once again invited the people to watch Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, which, gauging from the crowd’s reaction and fervor, was already a sure thing. We know you want to see the entire press conference, so here it is, divided into three 10(ish)-minute videos!
