If Iron Man 3 was exhilarating and Thor 2 was amazing, then brace yourself for another action-packed blockbuster treat in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (For fun facts about the making of this super sequel, click here.)
Captain America, Marvel’s beloved and most patriotic superhero, is back! A stronger and tougher Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) returns onscreen as he carries on his journey as the American super soldier who continues to stop the bad guys and save the day.
The film starts off with Captain America still trying his best to adjust to the modern world. After a quick chat with his new friend, veteran Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), he receives a message from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who later on will send the Captain and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) to a rescue operation of a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship that has been taken hostage by international terrorists. (Click here to find out who else is who in Captain America: The Winter Soldier!)
The film skillfully showed the other side of Captain America. Despite being a superhero, he is still an individual capable of feeling, which added more depth to his superhero character. This made him even more endearing and charismatic. (Okay, it helped that Chris Evans is way leaner and sexier this time around.)
However, I hoped that the other characters were given more spotlight or exposure on their own. I’m sure many would have loved to see more of the voluptuous Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow’s exemplary fighting skills. But even so, I’m sure after watching the movie she’ll be immortalized as one of the sexiest, most kick-ass heroines on film.
Another notably impressive thing about the movie is that it successfully strikes the balance of sophisticated old school full contact combat fighting (loved the close ups), wicked high-tech weaponry, and bad-ass car chases with notably not over-the-top CGI effects.
But probably what I loved most about the movie–about Marvel actually–is that they still understand the importance of mixing all the jaw-dropping action with good old values such as teamwork, patriotism, trust, and friendship, all of which make a superhero movie a timeless piece.
